Led by a Bell's Sound! Tale of the Great Warrior & the Explorer

As Enel rains lightning on the Shandia village, Wyper recalls the chief telling him about Kalgara's bond with an outsider. The flashback opens 400 years earlier, when Noland's storm-tossed crew is drawn to Jaya by a distant bell. Ashore they find the Shandia ravaged by Tree Fever, a green-staining disease their priests blame on a curse that demands young women be fed to a giant snake. Noland intervenes at the Sacrificial Altar, beheading the serpent Kashigami to save the girl Mousse, which enrages the worshippers and brings Kalgara charging in to defend his gods.

Noland's crew, low on food, watches their admiral dive overboard and surface with a huge fish. Following a bell through a storm, they reach Jaya and diagnose the boy Seto with Tree Fever, dosing him with conine. At the altar Noland slays Kashigami and rescues Mousse, provoking the villagers' fury. Kalgara battles Noland to a standstill, then spears him from behind. Noland denounces human sacrifice as a disgrace and pledges to cure the disease, asking only that the Shandia abandon the ritual if he succeeds. The chief grants him until the next evening. An earthquake then traps Noland in a crevice, where Kalgara lingers to gloat.

This top-rated episode is built almost entirely as a historical flashback and debuts a large cast of past figures, among them Kalgara, Mont Blanc Noland, Mousse, Seto, and the serpent Kashigami.
