Episode 494 introduces Sabo as Luffy reaches the trash-strewn Gray Terminal. After stumbling onto Ace and Sabo's hidden loot, Luffy is captured by the pirate Porchemy and tortured, but refuses to betray the two older boys.
At the edge of the woodland, Luffy comes upon Gray Terminal, a lawless dumping ground where the destitute pick through the refuse cast off by the townsfolk above, hunting anything of value. Still searching for Ace, Luffy watches him ambush and rob two men hauling treasure. When Ace bolts back toward the forest to join Sabo, Luffy tails him and blunders straight into their concealed stash, throwing the two older boys into a panic.
Ace and Sabo bind Luffy to a tree and resolve to kill him, though neither has ever taken a life and they have no idea how to begin. Overhearing their grim debate, Luffy starts shrieking, which gives away their position to Porchemy, who is hunting down whoever robbed his crew. The three try to hide in the brush, but Luffy is seized at once. Pressed to reveal where the stolen money and valuables are, he attempts a clumsy lie. Porchemy hauls him back to the hideout intending to beat the truth out of him, while Ace and Sabo relocate their treasure, certain Luffy will crack. Yet Luffy keeps denying any knowledge as the abuse continues, and Sabo eventually realizes the boy will never talk, prompting him and Ace to race off to save him.
The episode adapts parts of Chapters 583 and 584, and debuts Sabo, Porchemy, and Bluejam. Luffy's exploration of Gray Terminal was lengthened, with added shots of its inhabitants scavenging through the garbage, and a new sequence shows Ace robbing Bluejam's men. In one altered beat, when a subordinate pleaded for Porchemy to spare Luffy, the manga had Porchemy punch him with his spiked gloves, whereas the anime has Porchemy kick the man instead.

The transformation everyone knows, the follow-up question nobody would touch. Why we made a smooth R&B track about the golden glow Dragon Ball never talks about....
