Episode 501 unleashes the blaze that consumes Gray Terminal. Sabo fails to reach his brothers, Dragon meets the despairing boy for the first time, and Ace and Luffy find themselves cornered by a betrayed Bluejam.
Picking up from the previous cliffhanger, Sabo keeps stumbling as his father's men pursue him, letting them catch him before he can warn anyone. Meanwhile Bluejam admits to Ace and Luffy that a fire is coming to Gray Terminal, insisting he is only following orders rather than masterminding the scheme. Now that the boys understand the plot, he presses them about any hidden treasure. Back home, Outlook III hurls his son into the wine cellar, calling Sterry's adoption the right choice, but Sabo slips out through a metal grate to try saving the slum and his brothers.
Beaten by guards after pleading at the gate, Sabo is approached by a hooded stranger who asks what troubles him. The boy pours out the truth that the nobles and king set the fire, that the kingdom and its people reek worse than the slum, and that he is ashamed to have been born noble. The stranger is revealed as Dragon, visibly shaken that the Goa Kingdom has driven a child to such words, and he listens with understanding. As night winds rise, Bluejam's crew fire on the barrels and ignite the inferno. The city gates are sealed, those fleeing inward are cut down, and the trapped poor cannot escape past the flames. Bluejam recalls the king's promise of nobility, only to find the gate barred against him too, realizing the nobles have double-crossed him. Searching for a way out, he stumbles on Ace and Luffy, demands their treasure, and is left alone standing when Ace's Haki knocks out his whole crew. Enraged, he seizes Ace and aims a gun at his head.
The anime adds Sabo's recapture before the fire and the new scene of his father locking him in the wine cellar, after which he escapes only to be beaten at the gate. During Dragon's conversation with the boy, Ivankov does not appear at the end as he otherwise might. The installment adapts portions of chapters 586 and 587, and it marks the debut of Ahho Zurako and Ahho Desunen IX.
