Orochi wrecks the uprising before it can sail, stranding the Scabbards at a shattered harbor. The story then leaps back to Oden's reckless youth and a giant boar deity rampaging through the capital after its lost young.
To the dismay of the Nine Red Scabbards, nobody appears at Tokage Port for the crossing to Onigashima. The day before, Orochi had moved to wreck the plan ahead of time. Sending Kaidou's forces to destroy the Thousand Sunny, he also flattened every bridge feeding the harbor and ruined the port itself. Undeterred, the retainers resolve to set out with or without their allies and brace themselves to depart.
The Scabbards pause to reflect on what Oden left behind. A troublemaker since childhood, he had committed one outrage after another, among them the so-called Harem War, a string of clashes against samurai whose women he had taken, and at eighteen his father disowned him. The future retainers also lived by theft, with a young Kin'emon snatching a piglet and Denjiro cheating a merchant out of a pot. When the enormous creature called the Mountain God charges into town hunting its baby, Oden steps forward and orders Kin'emon to hand the animal over.
This installment first uses the eyecatchers tied to Oden's saga and opens a run of sixteen episodes tracing his life up to the present day. The adaptation adds Orochi tearing a map apart in glee once he assumes the revolt is finished, Oden bolting through bamboo and plunging into the sea over a sudden urge, Tsuru threatening Kin'emon with a knife, and a recounting of Oden's earlier exploits by Sukiyaki's attendant. Whereas the manga had three thugs open a box to show Tsuru the white piglet, the animated version simply has the creature spring out on its own.
