Appearance

Towering at 382 centimeters, Oden was a massive, heavily built man crowned with wild black hair flattened into a broad disc atop his head, complete with a sharp widow's peak and triangular sideburns. His dark eyes were rimmed with red liner and edged by jagged marks, set beneath steeply arched brows above a slightly hooked nose and a wide, expressive mouth. Even as a teenager he already looked fully grown, and his years with Roger left scars on his leg, arm, and chest.

For clothing he favored an orange kimono that bared much of his legs and carried two yellow crescent moons, worn with a purple and white sash across his shoulders, and he kept his swords Enma and Ame no Habakiri tucked at his left side. While carousing with the Whitebeard Pirates he traded this for a red shirt, striped blue trousers, and a crown.

Personality

Oden was brash, fearless, and utterly self-willed, a thrill-seeker who in his youth picked drunken brawls, torched a yakuza casino that banned him, and gathered kidnapped women into a mountain harem, caring nothing for the fallout. His reckless charm drew women to him willingly, even as most men recoiled. Maturity tempered the selfishness, and after being sentenced to the quarries he began acting for the good of the Flower Capital's people, though his schemes stayed gloriously ill-considered, as when he flooded the city while trying to relieve a drought.

He refused to abide by Wano's rigid customs, doing as he pleased and meaning well even when his methods alienated everyone around him. Beneath the bluster lay genuine devotion to his family, his retainers, and his homeland, and an unwavering resolve to see Wano opened to the world.

History

As daimyo of Kuri, Oden held great authority, and his pedigree as a former Whitebeard division commander and Roger crewmate gave him standing on both legendary crews; Whitebeard left his second-division seat empty for years in his honor. Kaidou himself counted Oden among the rare few, alongside Emperors and the Pirate King, capable of standing against him, and credited his single victory over Oden only to Kurozumi Higurashi's interference.

Oden mastered his own dual-blade form, the Oden Two Sword Style, wielding Enma and Ame no Habakiri with such force that he gouged the scar Kaidou bears to this day. His raw strength showed from infancy, when he flung his wet nurse across a room, and as an adult he could grip a scalding pot bare-handed and trade blows with Whitebeard's blade. He commanded all three forms of Haki, could tame the Haki-draining Enma as easily as a feather, and shared Roger and Luffy's gift of hearing the Voice of All Things. Having reached Laugh Tale and learned its secrets, he returned home determined to take his father's place and open Wano's gates, but his usurper Orochi and the pirate Kaidou executed him twenty years before the present in the event remembered as the Legendary Hour.
