A terrified Camus begs Ace for protection, which he grants on a condition. Riding out, Ace meets Luffy's crew, mistaken for the very sand pirates, and explains the so-called rebels are merely thugs. Vivi defends villagers willing to pose as protectors and proposes testing their mettle. Confronted by Luffy's bounty and surrounded by the menacing Straw Hats, Camus and his men cast off their cowardice and stand firm, earning Vivi's approval and the right to keep guarding the town.
