Overview

Confined to a single video game appearance, the Banzai Pirates leave behind very little verifiable backstory. A captain called Banzai heads the group, which was found living on the island where the Straw Hats drifted ashore after Noko and Tatsu robbed them of their memories. Nothing explains how the crew themselves came to that island.

A later sequence ties them, however faintly, to Baroque Works. When Nami, Robin, and Vivi discovered a hidden island stocked with suspicious dolls and learned far too much about that syndicate, the Banzai Pirates moved to keep the three women from sailing off, which suggests some affiliation with the organization.

Role

Waking confused on the beach without any recollection, the Straw Hats decided to band together and wandered toward the coast, where the notes of Noko's seahorse flute summoned the Banzai Pirates. The newcomers threatened Luffy, and because his lost memory had wiped away any sense of how to fight, Banzai landed the opening blows, hurting Luffy as well as Zoro and Sanji before turning on Nami and Chopper. Mr. 2 Bon Kurei arrived to even things out, and under his coaching Luffy insisted on a solo duel and put the crew down.

The second clash came at the secret island, where the trio of women recognized dolls once used by Igaram during the Whisky Peak affair. Sensing the women had grasped too much, the Banzai Pirates tried to bar their departure and were beaten for a second time. On the whole the crew is feeble, able to land hits only while their foes were memory-stripped, and they fold quickly once a real fight begins; their best showing comes from a combined group technique.
