Kogatana

Item

Kogatana is the tiny cross-shaped dagger Dracule Mihawk wears at his neck, the smallest blade in his arsenal. He treats it as jewelry more than a weapon, yet in his hands even this little knife was enough to overpower Zoro. The name comes only from the games, making it non-canon.

Overview

Among Mihawk's weapons sits this small golden dagger, shaped like a cross. With its cap on, it passes for an ordinary religious trinket, and he typically keeps it slung around his neck on a yellow cord. The blade never received an official name in the manga, anime, or any databook; every video game that features it labels it the kogatana, which is why the name carries non-canon status. In the 4Kids dub its cross-shaped sheath was removed entirely.

Function

Mihawk reserves this blade for opponents he considers beneath him, and it is the tiniest cutting weapon he owns. To him it functions more as an ornament than a tool of battle, an everyday knife so plain and small that he relishes the chance to show off his precision with it. Despite that, the dagger turned aside Zoro's strikes and sank close to his heart under barely any force, the basis of the named thrust Kogatana Hitotsuki, or Small Knife Single Thrust. Mihawk has also been seen using the blade as cutlery, eating takoyaki with it.

Notable Users

The dagger is exclusively Mihawk's. In the Pirate Warriors games it is drawn to look like a shrunken version of his great sword Yoru, and in SBS Volume 95 Oda personified both blades as humans: the kogatana appeared as a young girl named Omakeko, resembling a smaller counterpart to Yoru's human form Yoruko.
