Titled "Devil Fruit", the 19th chapter of One Piece pauses the brawl in Orange Town to flash back to Buggy's days sailing beside Shanks, explaining through bitter memory how the clown ever came to swallow his powers.
Still furious that Buggy dared call Shanks a friend, Luffy keeps swinging, and Buggy interrupts his own body-splitting only to be struck back down. His crew cannot accept their captain faltering, while Nami catches herself getting swept up in the spectacle. Outside the village, the worried townsfolk rally behind Poro and march in to find their missing mayor.
Naming Shanks as the man who has angered him most, Buggy slips into the past. The two once served the same crew and squabbled over which pole was colder until a senior member knocked their heads together and told them to go find out. When an enemy ship approached, Buggy salivated over loot while Shanks argued piracy meant more than treasure. During the raid Buggy pocketed a map to an underwater hoard and hid it, planning to claim the riches alone. At the celebration that night, his guilt showed, and he mocked Shanks as too naive to ever become a real pirate, the pair agreeing they would clash if they ever met again at sea.
Shanks reveals the party celebrated a recovered Devil Fruit, and after hearing of its powers and worth, Buggy resolves to eat it the next day. He gulps it down before the crew, secretly having swapped it for a fake so he could sell the real one. That night, as he prepares to slip away with both map and fruit, Shanks startles him so badly that he accidentally swallows the genuine Devil Fruit. When his treasure map blows overboard, Buggy dives after it and discovers the legend is true: the sea rejects fruit eaters, and he cannot swim. Shanks ultimately plunges in to rescue him. In the present, Luffy is glad Shanks saved him, which only enrages Buggy further, and the clown hurls his upper body at Nami after spotting her with his stolen loot.
Buggy's history with Shanks is laid bare, including how he came to eat the Bara Bara no Mi. Both are shown to have belonged to the same unnamed crew, later revealed to be the Roger Pirates. Shanks explains early Devil Fruit lore: they grant a specific power but cost the eater the ability to swim, and such fruits sell for at least 100 million berries. The chapter ends with Buggy lunging at Nami for taking his treasure.

Among the flashback crew are unnamed early versions of Silvers Rayleigh and Scopper Gaban. The chapter falls within the Orange Town Arc, and Boodle is left knocked out.
