Chapter 680

Inside the corridor linking the buildings, the exhausted Straw Hats and Kin'emon crowd onto a complaining Brownbeard. Not far behind, the dragon engineered by Vegapunk turns against Tashigi's retreating soldiers, spewing flame and chewing through the wall piping. The Marines erupt in cheers when Vergo strides in from the opposite side, sure that help has come, only to watch their own commander strike them down with Shigan.

Tashigi is the lone soldier who does not rejoice. Remembering the gentle officer she believed she knew, she rushes him, but Vergo grips her by the head and floors her with a vicious punch. The surviving troops mob him, refusing to accept that this is truly Vergo, and he annihilates them all. As Tashigi silently begs for rescue, Sanji comes bounding around the corner and slams a blazing Diable Jambe kick into Vergo's face.

The chapter shows that Shigan, a technique drawn from the Six Powers, is among Vergo's abilities, and the cover story discloses that his repeated absences, supposedly to care for a sick younger sister, hid his work for Doflamingo. Brownbeard warns that the smaller dragons, developed after the large one, are faster and hardier, and the creature with them turns hostile once its sedative fades. Luffy and Smoker race toward the lab and agree to divide their opponents, with Luffy claiming Caesar and Smoker claiming Vergo. When the door swings open to reveal only Caesar inside, Luffy drives a blindingly quick punch into his stomach.

Caesar instructs Monet to seal the passage gate and let the gas pour in even though Vergo remains inside, brushing off his enforcer's safety. Smoker is visibly let down to discover that Vergo is nowhere to be found in the lab. The cover advances Caribou's serial, showing Jinbe dragging his boat away from Coribou at fish-man speed.
