Appearance

Lean yet muscular and standing tall on light skin, Vergo wore his dark hair short and kept a beard, sideburns, and shades. The facial hair ran sideways out of his sideburns and dropped to a point along the cheek. His everyday outfit centered on a knee-length white trench coat, quilted across the top with two black chest pockets, layered over a mauve shirt whose purple ascot held a red jewel, finished with black gloves. During his open service at G-5, a Marine coat went over the whole thing.

Notorious as a careless eater, he routinely wandered around with scraps clinging to his face, anything from french fries to a half-finished burger patty, usually oblivious until somebody flagged it. One coffee stirring spoon lodged itself on his cheek and stayed put through several scenes, dislodged only when Sanji's kick finally shook it free. His younger self sported a bowl cut and no full beard, though the rest of his look hardly differed.

Personality

Cunning and slippery, Vergo fooled ordinary townspeople and the whole Marine hierarchy for years, extracting respect by forcing others to address him with a polite suffix and pummeling anyone who declined. Before the public and his own G-5 troops he wore the mask of a warm, easygoing officer, but his real character was vicious and remorseless, and he would gun down his own subordinates on a whim, writing them off as mere failures. He kept fierce devotion to the Donquixote Family, treating its officers like blood while saving his ugliest brutality for traitors.

For all his sharpness, Vergo drifted into peculiar lapses of stupidity, insisting he had savored cookies that were never served, or moving to grab a sword until Monet reminded him he wielded no blade. His blindness to food stuck on his own cheek stretched back to boyhood. The way he fought reflected his cruelty, beating opponents into the ground, and he even volunteered to slice an ear from Law to present Doflamingo as evidence of the kill.

History

At ten years old Vergo got to know the Donquixote Family, pledging himself to the boy Doflamingo together with Trebol, Pica, and Diamante after witnessing his Supreme King Haki; their meeting took place on Downs, an island within the North Blue. He became the first holder of the Corazon codename, then at twenty-six joined the Marines under Doflamingo's command, ceding the Heart seat to Donquixote Rosinante. A year on he arranged a transfer to G-5, and about six months after that a mission near Swallow Island led him to uncover Rosinante as a Marine spy, prompting him to savagely thrash both the traitor and the young Law. He needed roughly fifteen years to ascend to vice admiral and chief of G-5, the entire climb hiding his service to Doflamingo and his cover-up of Caesar's Punk Hazard experiments.

Thirteen years past Law's defection, Vergo journeyed to Punk Hazard and trapped him by crushing the loose heart Law had surrendered to Caesar. He locked away Law along with the captured Straw Hats and Marines, then exposed his betrayal to Smoker and Tashigi. After tearing through a G-5 platoon and trading blows with Sanji, he pursued Law to the room where SAD was produced and beat down both his target and Smoker using hardened Armament Haki. Law nonetheless recovered his heart with Smoker's aid and split Vergo in two at the waist with an enormous spatial slash. Doflamingo afterward unleashed a lethal gas that wiped out everyone near the lab save Caesar, thanking Vergo for his loyalty as the chamber detonated and claimed his life.
