Summary

Four decades and a year before the present, a lush and thriving Wano sets the stage. At a mountain tea house, the poster girl Tsuru hears travelers boast of catching a rare white boar to sell to a gang boss, and she catches Kin'emon trying to pick her purse. The young thug, scrounging coin for his struggling friends, later ambushes the travelers and takes the boar, their money, and their clothes for himself, planning to deliver the animal to the Kurokoma family.

Key Events

In the shogun's castle, a scribe informs Kouzuki Sukiyaki that his son Oden has failed to leave Wano for the thirty-eighth time. He then catalogs a lifetime of mayhem: as an infant Oden hurled his wet nurse across a room, as a child he killed a bear with a thrown boulder, torched a casino, flooded the capital while trying to relieve a drought, and even abducted women to assemble a harem. Now eighteen, Oden still causes daily chaos, so Sukiyaki orders that he be formally cast out of the family.

Notes

The chapter fleshes out Kin'emon's childhood ties to Tsuru and his past as a notorious ruffian, and it formally introduces Sukiyaki, Denjiro, and a fully revealed Oden. The infamous Harem Revolt is named, and Hyougoro's old war with the rival Kurokoma yakuza is established. Oden is shown cooking a pot of his namesake stew atop a man's cremated remains, and after overhearing Denjiro warn that the boar's mountain-sized parent will follow, a rampaging Mountain God strikes the capital just as Oden demands the white boar for himself.
