Merz is a blind former Amegakure shinobi who idolised Pain and later founded the group Zero. Appearing in Naruto x Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections, he wields artificial Sharingan and Mangekyō eyes in his own bid for godhood, nearly touching off a Fifth Shinobi World War.

Appearance

Merz lost his sight during the Amegakure civil war, and the eyes he later fights with are not his own. Both sockets are fitted with machinery, the left one rebuilt almost entirely in metal, which leaves the implanted eye bulging and ill-seated. He keeps these artificial eyes sealed away, much as Ao once did, opening them only when he means to use their power.

Personality

On the surface Merz keeps a courteous manner, yet his aim is the same divinity Pain once chased, stripped of any care for the peace that Pain believed would follow. To him, people are instruments, and he spends them freely toward his own ends.

Abilities

Pain himself judged Merz strong enough to stand as an ally, and even weakened, Naruto and Sasuke both struggle to bring him down. His edge is technological: through Teguse's Scientific Ninja Tools he receives artificial Sharingan that drain neither his stamina nor his chakra and can even copy bloodline-locked dojutsu. Those eyes extend into an artificial Mangekyō Sharingan, a mirror of Nanashi Uchiha's, granting him Yachihoko and the Engraved Tsukuyomi. Through the latter he brands his victims and can recall the chakra of everyone marked, reaching even Naruto. With a Mangekyō in each eye he wields a Complete Body Susanoo so vast it dwarfs Sasuke's, hurls the Yasaka Magatama, and holds off the combined Majestic Attire: Susanoo of Naruto and Sasuke. He sets his scheme in motion through the virtual game Ninja Heroes, which secretly siphons players' chakra and memories, then triggers a counterfeit Infinite Tsukuyomi that nearly ignites a fifth great war before Boruto, Sasuke, and a cured Naruto overcome him.
