Phil rattles easily. When Titans pour into Trost District, worry for the vanguard keeps him from focusing on his own squad's job, and he later reaches Pixis and Erwin in a visible fluster while reporting that the two great Titans have resurfaced inside Wall Rose. Nerves loosen his tongue at bad moments; to Hannes he blurts out that Mikasa, Armin, and Eren, the trio the captain saved five years earlier, now stand with the vanguard, then catches his error and apologizes. For all the jitters, his commitment holds, and he volunteers into the mission to wrest Eren back from the traitors.

With Trost's gate smashed by the Colossus Titan, Phil's squad climbs Wall Rose for lookout duty against the giant's possible return. Hannes marvels at the Titan traps rigged along the top while Phil worries aloud about the comrades fighting in the vanguard, mentioning the three cadets before he can stop himself and hastily apologizing.

During the crisis inside Wall Rose he rides at Hannes's side searching for a breach, and he is present when Hannes tells Hange none exists. He watches Reiner Braun and Bertolt Hoover expose themselves as the Armored and Colossus Titans, sees their battle against the Survey Corps, and witnesses Eren Yeager carried off. Command then sends him to Pixis with a double report: Wall Rose stands unbroken, and three Titans were unmasked inside the 104th Training Corps. Rejoining Erwin's rescue column, he reaches the Titan Forest where the traitors fled, and Hannes details him to gather the horses while everyone else pushes in among the trees.
