Appearance

The Moonlight Knight is dressed head to toe in white styled after traditional Middle Eastern garb: a mask, a turban-style headpiece, white trousers and top, and a flowing white cape reminiscent of Tuxedo Mask's. A brown sash circles his waist and holds a sheathed scimitar. Apart from the costume, his face is identical to the real Mamoru's in every feature.

Personality

Much like Tuxedo Mask, the Moonlight Knight is deeply caring and protective toward Usagi in her Sailor Moon role. Although Mamoru had lost his memories and Tuxedo Mask vanished from the story, his drive to keep Sailor Moon safe endured and grew strong enough to take on a shape of its own. He steps in to defend and rescue her when battles turn dangerous and offers her encouraging words. Because he is a piece of Mamoru's own soul, he behaves almost exactly as the real Mamoru would.

History

Mamoru Chiba died at D Point from wounds taken fighting Queen Beryl, after which Sailor Moon used the Silver Crystal to end the Dark Kingdom for good. The Crystal's power bent reality and returned Mamoru, Usagi, and the whole Sailor Team safely to Azabu-Juuban, though all of them lost their memories of one another and of the battle. When the Makaiju reached Earth and Cardians started appearing, Luna and Artemis reawakened the team's dormant memories so they could transform again, yet Mamoru stayed behind: not being a Sailor Senshi, his memories could not be restored, so he carried on with no recollection of Tuxedo Mask, Sailor Moon, or his feelings for Usagi.

Soon after the reunion, a masked stranger began aiding the group the way Tuxedo Mask once had. Calling himself the Moonlight Knight and armed with white roses and a scimitar, he first showed up during the fight against the Cardian Falion, and Sailor Moon was instantly struck by how much he resembled Prince Endymion. Her assumption that he was Mamoru fell apart when the Knight later appeared in the same room as Mamoru himself. The team kept digging into his identity and for a time suspected Seijuro Ginga, until Makoto ruled it out after noticing how differently the two men regarded love.

The truth ran stranger than anyone guessed. With Mamoru's memories locked away, his wish to shield Sailor Moon stayed powerful, and once she was reawakened that buried desire took form as the Moonlight Knight. Though essentially a psychic projection, he had real physical presence and could act on the world around him. He revealed himself to Sailor Moon during the clash with the Makaiju, just as Mamoru's memories were returning, then merged back into Mamoru one last time, restoring his memories and his power to become Tuxedo Mask once more.
