Specter Sisters

The four sisters share the markings of their faction. Each wears an inverted dark crescent on her forehead, the same sign carried by everyone in the Black Moon Clan, along with a pair of earrings cut from dark crystal. Individually they go by the names Koan, Berthier, Calaveras, and Petz.

Loyalty to Rubeus defines the group, yet they are far from a united front. In the animated version the sisters squabble endlessly, each straining to outshine the others and win the favor of Crimson Rubeus; at one low point Petz turns on her siblings, branding them traitors and trying to kill them. They serve as dark mirrors of the Inner Sailor Guardians, wielding the very same elements those heroines command, with the lone exception of Calaveras, who has no elemental gift and fights with a whip instead.

In the manga and Crystal continuity, the quartet obeys Rubeus and belongs to the Black Moon Clan, dispatched to seize the child called Rabbit, meaning Chibiusa, and to hypnotize ordinary people into serving the Black Moon or quietly slipping into modern society. Koan went first, taking the name Koan Kurozuki as a pupil at Rei Hino's school; she pinned Sailor Mars behind a barrier of blue flame before Sailor Moon's Moon Princess Halation destroyed her. Berthier followed and caught Sailor Mercury inside a wall of water, only to fall to the same attack. Petz came next, loosing a virus across Tokyo and trapping Sailor Jupiter within a barrier of lightning, and she too was undone by Moon Princess Halation. Calaveras was last, posing as a fortune-teller to snare Sailor Venus, but she was struck down before she could finish the job.

The animated series charts a different course. There the sisters lean on Droids to seize the Crystal Points on Rubeus' behalf, though the Sailor Guardians thwart every attempt. Rather than being killed, all four are eventually cleansed of the Malefic Black Crystal's corruption once Rubeus casts them aside, restored to ordinary, decent people through Sailor Moon's Moon Crystal Power. They open a cosmetics shop and cut ties with the Black Moon Clan; later, when Saphir uncovers Wiseman's manipulation of the clan and is gravely wounded trying to warn Prince Demande, he flees to Earth and is nursed back to health by the sisters.

The sisters also reached the stage and other media. Petz, Calaveras, and Koan featured in the musical about the birth of Black Lady, with Berthier joining them in its revised edition, where they unleashed a combined move called Black Vicious Crystal. In the Naoko-penned SNES game Sailor Moon: Another Story, set shortly before the Sailor Stars season, Apsu's magic strips away their purification while they run their shop; confronting the Guardians, they confess they no longer hate them, yet feel the violent past etched on their souls cannot coexist with their innocent new selves, and choose to fight of their own free will. The Guardians kill them with heavy hearts, and the sisters offer thanks with their final breath.
