A Man's Kindness: Yuichiro Heartbroken by Rei

Yuichiro grows anxious as Rei spends night after night meditating without rest. When he brings her food, she waves him away to keep her focus, so he leaves behind a slim ribbon to keep her hair clear of the flames. The next day Usagi teases him into believing his worry is really lovesickness and that Rei's affections point right back at him, a claim she immediately regrets voicing aloud.

Kaolinite, riding along on a streetcar, plants a daimon egg inside it and waits for a pure-hearted passenger. When Haruka offers the weary Rei a lift home on her motorbike, Yuichiro takes the tall stranger for a man and storms off in a jealous huff, having also glimpsed Haruka and Michiru sharing a tender moment.

Convinced he has been beaten by a two-timing rival, Yuichiro challenges Haruka to a brawl and lands face-first in the mud with every failed lunge. He finally gives up, wishing Rei happiness before announcing to her grandfather that he is leaving on a soul-searching trip. Usagi eventually persuades Rei that his feelings are genuine, and she chases after him to the trolley stop just as he prepares to board.

The streetcar transforms into the daimon Toden, and Rei becomes Sailor Mars only to be bound by its ropes. The other Guardians arrive, Venus frees Mars with the Love Me Chain, and Mercury recovers Yuichiro's pure heart, which proves to be no talisman. After an exorcism chant halts the monster, Mars strikes with Burning Mandala and Sailor Moon finishes it using Moon Spiral Heart Attack, while Uranus and Neptune observe that the Inner Guardians handle themselves well.

The tenth entry of the third season debuted in Japan on June 18, 1994, and reached North America as "Mixed Emotions" on June 23, 2000. Megumi Sugihara scripted it and Harume Kosaka directed. Once Yuichiro wakes at the station, Rei ties his gift ribbon around one of his wounds, jokes that a bigger bow would suit her better, and reveals that Haruka is in fact a woman, sparing him further jealousy. They head home together, with the injured Yuichiro leaning on her shoulder.

The music playing as Yuichiro departs Hikawa Shrine, "Azusa No. 2," appears only in this episode across the whole anime. Trivia also notes his switch to geta sandals in his casual outfit and a continuity slip where the girls change from home clothes into school uniforms between scenes.
