The Light of Hope: The Final Battle for the Galaxy

The roster of defenders has thinned to almost nothing. Eternal Sailor Moon, Sailor Chibi Chibi, and the three Starlights are all that stand between Galaxia and total conquest, and the Starlights pour out what little strength they have left in one desperate assault, taking grievous injuries for it.

Usagi still believes the enemy can be turned back toward good. Her healing power flares, but Galaxia answers at the last second by breaking the Eternal Tiare and cracking her Star Seed, leaving her at death's door. It is then that Chibi Chibi weeps, and her tear floods the scene with rosy light, marking her as the vessel of the Light of Hope.

A narration from Princess Kakyuu frames the endless Sailor Wars, in which reincarnated Guardians of planets and stars have always risen against forces that shatter the peace. The greatest of them, Galaxia, once trapped the cosmic evil Chaos inside her own body to spare the galaxy, but the isolation that followed pushed her to remake the future alone by seizing star seeds across the stars. The Starlights reel at learning that the foe before them is the very Light of Hope they set out to find. Usagi argues there could have been a gentler path had everyone stood together, and insists goodness still lives inside Galaxia. Sailor Star Fighter shields her from the retaliation that follows.

Galaxia scatters the group and mocks the way Guardians turn on one another when doom closes in, a charge Fighter furiously rejects. The Starlights fuse their powers and manage to wound Galaxia's left arm before she strikes them all down. When Fighter tries one more attack, Galaxia crushes her bracelet underfoot. Usagi steps between them, pleading, and points out that since Galaxia bleeds she must also feel pain and regret. Galaxia scorns the comparison, vows to rebuild the galaxy as a goddess, and shatters the summoned Tiare before it can complete its healing. As the Starlights fall for good, Usagi raises the Silver Crystal, but its glow stays faint, and Galaxia breaks it too, forcing Usagi back to her ordinary self, barely conscious.

In Galaxia's own mind, her true self reflects on all she has done, sensing Chaos steadily strengthening inside her failing body. A vast golden field of star seeds appears, and it is revealed she long ago cast her own star seed, the Light of Hope, into the farthest reaches of the galaxy, trusting a newborn world of love and justice to keep it safe. As the killing blow descends, Chibi Chibi's tear spreads waves of warm pink light that return Usagi's star seed to her and stir her awake. Galaxia realizes the Light of Hope has at last begun to wake, its glow washing over half of Earth.

This installment holds the only appearance of the Silver Moon Crystal Power attack and stands as Usagi's last outing as Sailor Moon, alongside the final uses of the Starlights' signature techniques and their Star Yell. During the flashback in which Galaxia releases her star seed, an instrumental take on her image song plays underneath. The animation repeatedly shows only the outline of her necklace filled in rather than the whole piece.

The closing theme heard here is used for the last time in the series. Both this episode and the one after it drew a TV-MA rating when streamed on Hulu, a step above the TV-PG carried by the rest of the run. The story also diverges sharply from the manga, where Chibi Chibi is revealed as an unnamed Guardian from beyond the solar system whose power exceeds Galaxia's, and where Galaxia never sealed Chaos at all but was instead lured toward greater power by Chaos in disguise.
