Roughly a year ahead of the main events, Eunseok signed on for the 3rd Jeju Island Raid together with Baek Yoonho and Min Byung-Gyu. The operation collapsed, and he lost his life in circumstances that were never made clear. His death crushed the morale of the Korean government, which abandoned any hope of reclaiming Jeju with domestic hunters. Byung-Gyu was hit so hard by the loss that he walked away from hunting entirely to teach history.
When the 4th raid was put on the table about a year afterward, Byung-Gyu invoked Eunseok's fate in trying to talk Baek out of going. Baek would not be moved, arguing that leaving the Jeju Island S-Rank Gate unsealed would condemn millions of ordinary Koreans to slaughter by the ants, the same fate that had claimed Eunseok.
