Thomas Austin

A soft, rounded build and eyes that seem permanently closed give Thomas a mild, unthreatening presence. His brown hair is kept short, and he wears glasses along with a brown jacket over a white collared shirt, blue trousers cinched by a brown belt, and dress shoes.

Soft-spoken and unassuming, Thomas has earned real affection from Eden's students, some of whom still speak warmly of him as adults. That same docility works against him in his marriage. Years of inattentive behavior he never noticed committing gradually soured the relationship, and where his wife now vents her frustrations openly, Thomas has quietly grown terrified of her. He is also a respected educator, well regarded by pupils and colleagues alike for his skill as a dorm tutor.

Thomas supervises Cecile Hall alongside Henry Henderson, a trusted colleague with whom he often discusses students over tea. When the Red Circus hijacks the school's field-trip buses, Thomas is hurt in the incident, and Henry negotiates to take his seat among the hostages so he can receive treatment. Nightmares plague him afterward, and on Henry's recommendation he consults the psychiatrist Loid Forger, who traces the tremors to a deeper problem: his terror of his wife. With Loid's coaching he begins practicing attentiveness at home, and the marriage shows early signs of thawing.

When false bribery accusations later drive Henry to resign, Thomas stands among his few open defenders, arguing the investigation is unfinished and refusing to accept the decision. Unable to change his friend's mind, he instead gathers Cecile Hall's first-years for a proper farewell.
