Summary

Study time at the Forger home goes badly. With the Friendship Scheme dead after Anya's falling-out with Damian Desmond, Loid has staked Operation Strix on Plan A, making her an Imperial Scholar, and he pushes fractions on the struggling girl under threat of a missed spy cartoon. Anya's telepathic shortcut fails on both parents: Loid's mind races too fast to follow, while Yor's is serenely empty on the subject of math. Overloaded, Anya bolts to her room screaming that she hates studying.

Yor gently challenges the pressure Loid is applying, asking whether Imperial Scholar status is even something Anya wants, and admits she mostly hopes the girl enjoys school. Loid concedes the point, thanking her for speaking up and confessing how poorly he handles children. When an offer of hot chocolate meets silence from Anya's door, Yor likens the girl's stubbornness to her own childhood with her brother Yuri, recalling that Yuri, though the more gifted sibling, studied hardest whenever her praise was the reward. Loid absorbs the lesson, and when Yor apologizes for overstepping as an outsider, he counters that she is family now and enlists her help with future study sessions. Privately he reflects that assassinating Donovan Desmond was never the mission; a spy plays the long game, earns a target's trust, and in this case must understand Anya first. Announcing her cartoon as a peace offering, he finds her asleep at her desk after pushing on alone, mumbling about becoming number one for her father. He carries her to bed, puzzled by her sleepy plea that her mother not kill her father, and wonders once more how a real family would feel. Across town, Dominic casually congratulates Yuri on his sister's marriage, and the stunned brother demands to know whether it is true.

Notes

Young Yuri's flashback shirt reads "otouto," the Japanese word for younger brother. Missing furigana in Loid's thoughts on page 12 of the digital release were corrected for Volume 2, and Anya's room contains the penguin plushie introduced in Extra Mission 1.

According to the official fanbook, this chapter deliberately spells out that Twilight's assignment is surveillance rather than assassination, correcting a widespread reader assumption that he was meant to infiltrate the Desmond residence and kill Donovan.
