Chapter 14

The morning after Yuri's visit, Anya plucks the truth from Loid's thoughts: her new uncle serves in the Secret Police. Finding the idea thrilling, she wails about never getting to meet him. Loid, though, cannot relax; a brother inside the SSS puts Yor in a new light, and though WISE's vetting raised nothing, he chooses caution. Over breakfast, Anya nearly blurts what she has read about Yor before swerving into calling her cooking bad, deflating Yor.

Heading out, Loid decides a listening device will settle his doubts and plants one on Yor while pretending to brush grime from her neck. Fresh off the previous night's near-kiss, Yor briefly mistakes the gesture for something else, then spirals into self-criticism, deciding his distant manner that morning means her performance as a wife has let him down.

At SSS headquarters, the Lieutenant quizzes Yuri about his injuries and assumes a drunken brawl. Yuri claims Loid seemed decent but might be acting, perhaps even a spy who belongs behind bars, kicks himself for not planting bugs, then imagines the sounds he might overhear from his sister's home and slams his head into a locker. The Lieutenant advises him to bless Yor's happiness and redirects him to the section's true work: capturing Twilight comes before everything.

At Berlint City Hall, Yor types through barely contained tears while her coworkers pick apart her marriage anxieties and advise her to simply end the relationship. Listening from the roof, Loid confirms she has never dated anyone before, though he cannot yet rule out an elaborate act. When Chief Barnes sends Yor to deliver a letter, Loid opts for a direct test.

Outside the post office, Loid and Franky accost her disguised as Secret Police officers, claiming her mailed letter hides a coded message bound for the West and names her a collaborator. They pile on stories of tortured detainees and of a young secretary freed purely because a relative served in the SSS, deliberately dangling an escape Yor could take by naming Yuri, if she knows what he is. She never does. Instead she asserts her daily hard work for the country, hurls the lunging Franky to the pavement with a reminder that she is a married woman who should not be touched, and promises no mercy to anyone threatening her husband or brother. Loid closes the charade through the script's exit: "Lieutenant Mop" rechecks the cipher and discovers the letter is merely Barnes writing to a hemorrhoid specialist, so the officers apologize and release her.

Franky pronounces her clear of Secret Police ties and warns Loid against letting feelings contaminate the mission; Loid rips the disguise off his friend's face rather than hear the lecture through it. That evening he intercepts Yor on her walk home and retrieves the bug with the same collar trick. When she apologizes for failing as a wife, he tells her that chasing an ideal can smother a person's real strengths, that endless performance exhausts anyone, and that Anya would be happiest seeing her genuine smile. Yor answers that marrying him is something she is glad of. Caught off guard, Loid crushes the recovered bug, then suggests cake to mark the one-year anniversary their cover story claims. Anya returns to find her parents at peace and bounces with joy at the promise of dessert.

Anya learns through telepathy that Yuri belongs to the Secret Police, while Loid begins treating Yor as a potential threat.

Loid bugs Yor's collar and stages a fake SSS interrogation with Franky, offering her every opening to invoke Yuri's name.

Yor's refusal to betray anything, capped by throwing the disguised Franky, convinces Loid of her innocence; he destroys the bug and celebrates the fake anniversary with cake.

Mission 14 runs 31 pages, sits in Volume 3 within the Secret Police Arc, and was released on September 23, 2019. Loid, Anya, and Yor share the cover, and Episode 9 of the anime adapts its events. The impersonation of the SSS Lieutenant staged here becomes a liability much later, when Loid encounters the real Chadwick Curtis at the gathering in Mission 134.
