Mission 3

Yor moves into the residence at 128 Park Avenue while Anya pitches in with cleaning, and Loid explains he has backdated the marriage certificate a year to keep Eden Academy from growing suspicious. A trial interview goes badly enough that he decides the family needs a crash course in upper-class culture and takes them out for the day. Yor and Anya begin to warm to each other until Anya's telepathy surfaces memories of the injuries Yor used to inflict on her brother, sending the girl scurrying away.

The refinement tour fails at every stop. Opera leaves Yor baffled and Anya asleep. At the museum Anya fixates on nudes and a statue missing its head, while a guillotine painting holds Yor transfixed. A Nationalist Party rally promoting reconciliation with Westalis drowns Anya in the crowd's hostile thoughts until she turns dizzy, and table manners at an upscale restaurant push Loid toward despair. Unable to devise a plan that works around his wife and daughter, he grows visibly frustrated, prompting Yor to suggest fresh air.

She leads them to a rooftop park where she goes to remember that her work helps people. There, Loid watches a man snatch an elderly woman's purse below. He reacts with detached commentary, but Yor vaults straight off the wall in pursuit, an athletic display that jolts him into joining the chase. Yor loses the thief and doubles back to the victim; Loid tracks him into a crowded street before losing him among the masses. Anya strains her telepathy against the crowd until, through a nosebleed, she picks out the thief's gloating thoughts. Unable to admit how she knows, she points at a cake shop he happens to pass, and Loid recognizes him despite a change of clothes. Leaping from a second-floor railing, Loid flattens the man, realizes too late that he has drawn a crowd, and hurries off after a quick explanation.

The grateful old woman looks at the trio interacting and calls them a wonderful family. Back home, the mock interview improves, at least until Anya cites the flying tackle as her favorite memory. Loid consoles himself that if strangers can mistake them for a family, the mission still stands a chance.

Yor officially moves in, with the marriage certificate backdated for the Eden interview. Loid's attempts to culture the family through opera, art, and fine dining all collapse. The purse-snatcher chase becomes the turning point: Yor's fearless pursuit, Anya's covert telepathic assist, and Loid's takedown earn them a stranger's judgment that they truly are a family, restoring hope for the mission.

Mission 3 spans 27 pages in Volume 1, released April 22, 2019, during the Admissions Interview Arc and adapted in Episode 3. Loid, Anya, and Yor share the cover.

The opera singer's costume and surrounding music notes evoke the Queen of the Night aria from Mozart's Die Zauberflöte; the anime substitutes a male singer performing "Estuans Interius" from Orff's Carmina Burana. The four boys Loid gazes at in the park may foreshadow the group of friends from his past shown in Chapter 62; Endo originally drew elderly people there and redrew the scene for greater resonance. Page 17 of the initial Japanese digital release also displayed Yor's chase dialogue as unformatted type, corrected for the Volume 1 printing.
