Chapter 53

Surveying the carnage, the Assassin Leader marvels that Yor slaughtered nearly his entire crew and brands her heartless. She shrugs off the label and offers the survivors a chance to simply leave, which he rejects: the fee is already paid, there is nowhere to flee on a ship, and Matthew clearly means to kill them all regardless.

The exchange is a stall. A Swordsman strikes from behind the pair; both duck the blade, but before Matthew can return fire, a blow from the sheath hammers his chest and slams him into a wall, out cold. Fighting on alone, Yor loses her grip in a clash, her weapon spinning away to the deck below, and blocks the follow-up swing with her foot.

Her legs grow heavy as a memory intrudes: Matthew once told her that if she died or was maimed, Loid would simply be informed of a sudden emergency transfer. Vanishing without a word, Yor reflects, would make her the heartless one. The Swordsman's next slash shears off a lock of her hair, and she catches herself panicking over how her family will react to a changed hairstyle before forcing her focus back to the duel.

Sensing hesitation, her opponent invites her to withdraw if death frightens her; the leader sweetens it with a cut of the bounty, arguing that killers like them all murder to eat. Yor refuses both, insisting she is nothing like them, yet when she reaches for the reason she took up killing, nothing comes. In that opening the Swordsman feints at her face, her heel catches a gap in the deck, and his sheath sends her sprawling against a wall.

Dazed under his leveled blade, Yor's scattered thoughts land on Yuri: his Foreign Ministry job offer, his first paycheck, proof he no longer needs her. She resolves to make this her last job, and then the leader starts toward Olka's hiding place. Her earring, torn off and thrown, stops him mid-stride. Remembering Olka's simple wish for a quiet life, Yor recovers her answer: she became an assassin, and stayed one, to keep Yuri's carefree world intact. The world breeds needless tragedy, she reasons, and someone has to scrub it clean, all the more now that the Forgers are hers to protect.

Renewed, Yor catches the Swordsman's blade bare-handed and snaps it. His desperate slash opens her chest, but she does not so much as flinch, telling herself she can live without peace and with bloody hands, trusting that Loid, who once praised her devotion to her work, would understand even her death. A crushing blow lands on the Swordsman as she declares the fight far from over.

The Swordsman ambushes the pair mid-negotiation, knocking Matthew unconscious and disarming Yor, then batters her to the deck as her doubts about her assassin life resurface at the worst possible moment.

Yor rejects the Assassin Leader's buyout offer, rediscovers her founding purpose, protecting Yuri's happiness, now widened to include the Forgers, and reenters the fight by shattering the Swordsman's blade bare-handed, taking a chest wound without flinching.

Matthew's quip about the Assassin Leader ending up as shark food proves prophetic: Chapter 55 delivers exactly that fate to him and Snoops.

The original digital release drew the leader in a collared shirt and tie on three pages instead of his turtleneck, an inconsistency fixed for Volume 8. The chapter is adapted in Episode 33 of the anime, and Yor's flashback of Loid's admiration reaches back to the night depicted in Chapter 2.
