Summary

Mission 62 of Tatsuya Endo's SPY x FAMILY arrived in three separate installments, and its second portion reached Shonen Jump Plus on April 18, 2022. Sitting within the Loid's Past Arc in Volume 10, this section carries the flashback from the first bombs falling on Luwen through Twilight's earliest days as a soldier.

Smoke rises on the horizon while a bewildered Loid tries to process what he is seeing. A second shell lands on the town square and the blast throws him down, a piece of debris striking his head. His toy helmet absorbs the worst of it, and he wakes among the wreckage of the croquette stand and the square where he had been helping prepare the fair. Fleeing townsfolk shout that Ostanian forces are advancing, words that clash with every adult reassurance he had heard about peace. His mother finds him, and the two pack what they can before abandoning Luwen for her uncle's home in Kielberg.

Refuge proves temporary. With his father unaccounted for, Loid privately brands every grown-up a liar, then admits he is one too, resolving to confess the lie about the pocket money once his father comes home. One evening he catches a fish for dinner, only for air-raid sirens to sound as he returns. Bystanders drag him into a shelter, but he breaks free to search for his mother. What he finds at the family's lodging is her body in the rubble, and the boy screams alone amid the ruins.

Years of scraping by follow. Hollowed out and surrounded by everything he once feared, he enlists under the alias Roland Spoofy, faking his age to fight in the East-West conflict. His gift for tactics keeps him alive through battle after battle, though he wonders how high the corpses must stack before dawn ever arrives. While posted in the mountains, one of his snares catches a scruffy stranger, and Loid opens fire as the man frantically begs for a cease-fire.

Key Events

Luwen is destroyed in a surprise Ostanian bombing campaign, and Loid survives the town square blast thanks to the toy helmet he had just bought with money obtained through a lie to his father.

Loid and his mother evacuate to Kielberg, where his father never rejoins them. A later air raid on that town kills his mother while Loid is pulled toward a shelter, leaving him orphaned in the debris.

After years of solitary survival, Loid lies about his age and joins the Westalian army under the name Roland Spoofy, earning a reputation as a battlefield tactician during the Second East-West War of Unification.

The section closes on the first meeting between the future Twilight and a trapped, ragged man in the mountains, the deserter who will one day be known as Franky Franklin.

Notes

Mission 62 is the first chapter of the series distributed as three separate releases; Part 1 ran 19 pages, Part 2 ran 23, and Part 3 ran 30. Volume 10 stitches all three back into a single chapter.

The protagonist's birth name stays hidden throughout, blacked out in every panel where it would appear. Viz's English release of Volume 10 refers to him as [REDACTED] in the synopsis.

Loid's firefight against Ostanian soldiers on page 19 of this part deliberately echoes the pretend skirmish he played with his friends at the start of Part 1. The anime splits this material between Episode 39 and Episode 40, and Loid appears alone on the Part 2 cover.
