Chapter 62 Part 3

The final installment of Mission 62, published May 16, 2022 on Shonen Jump Plus, runs 30 pages and completes the Loid's Past Arc flashback in Volume 10 of Tatsuya Endo's SPY x FAMILY. It picks up with young Loid holding a trapped Ostanian at gunpoint in the mountains.

The captive turns out to be a deserter who lost his way, and his absurd plea about dying before ever knowing a woman disarms Loid enough to earn him a cigarette. Over the smoke, the man describes a university experiment on how planted ideas flip people's opinions, then argues the entire war is a meaningless product of failed diplomacy. When he suggests the Luwen bombing was staged by Westalis itself, Loid snaps, kicking him down and raising his rifle while reciting his hatred of the Ostanian monsters who took everything. He hesitates, and a bullet from the pursuing Ostanian troops glances off his helmet. Both men bolt in different directions, Loid stumbling downhill and questioning what he is even doing.

Wounded and rotated off the front, Loid discovers General, Corporal, and Major alive in the hospital; they had chased after him just before the first bomb fell. His guilt dissolves into tears, and he plans a restaurant outing, but the trio ships out that night on a carelessly drawn-up operation. Only their dog tags return. Grieving, Loid concludes he fought a war he never understood and settles on the conviction that ignorance is not bliss but weakness, and ultimately sin.

A stranger from military intelligence later confronts him, armed with his real name and his falsified enlistment, and offers recruitment backed by the threat of a court-martial. At the station, the recruiter burns Loid's belongings and demands he become a shadow for his country. Loid answers that nobody alive knows his true name anyway, and that neither patriotism nor victory motivates him; asked what does, he watches children pass by and claims nothing. Sylvia Sherwood receives him as his handler, tasked with forging a first-rate operative by any means. The dream ends there: Twilight bolts awake on the Forger sofa in a cold sweat, comforted by Anya's head pat and Yor's concern. Reminded that he fainted over Anya's Tonitrus Bolt, he tells his daughter that friends deserve to be treasured, then cooks hot onion soup for the family.

Twilight and the future Franky Franklin cross paths for the first time as wartime enemies, with the deserter's talk of false flags and pointless conflict planting the first cracks in Loid's certainty about who started the war.

General, Corporal, and Major turn out to have survived Luwen, and Loid finds them again in the hospital, only to lose all three to a recklessly planned deployment marked by the return of their dog tags.

A Westalis military intelligence recruiter conscripts Loid under threat of court-martial; his possessions are burned at the station and his identity discarded, and Sylvia Sherwood becomes his commanding officer, revealed as the mentor who trained him for WISE.

In the present, Twilight wakes from the memory inside the Forger apartment and, moved by his past, urges Anya to cherish her friendship with Damian before preparing dinner for the household.

Part 3 is the longest of Mission 62's three installments at 30 pages, and its cover pairs Loid Forger with Franky Franklin. The Volume 10 release merges the parts into one continuous chapter, and Episode 40 of the anime adapts this material.

The chapter keeps Twilight's given name redacted behind black bars from start to finish. The dog tags carried by his friends resemble German models from World War II, one of several wartime touches, alongside a Prime Minister named Adner that nods to Konrad Adenauer, West Germany's first chancellor.

When Yor watches Loid wake near the end, her book's title reads Kaji, the Japanese word for housework or chores.
