Kazuichi Banjou

Banjou is a tall, thickset man with short, ruddy hair and a stout heart. He first sported a beard shaped like a reversed kana stroke, later trading it for a cross-shaped design.

Peaceable by nature and weak in a fight, Banjou admires the strong and those who live free of rigid rules, and unlike many ghouls of the 11th ward he shows genuine compassion. He returns kindness with respect, as he does with Kaneki, and reads people keenly enough to sense Kaneki's mounting inner conflict before the young man snapped. After the time skip he grew more charismatic, learned, and capable, uniting the 6th ward's ghouls, working through difficult novels, and even turning his kagune to healing.

Back when Rize lived in the 11th ward, Banjou spoke up for her at ghoul meetings and hoped she would lead them, though she brushed him off as a nuisance and threatened him. Taking her parting remark as a duty, he tried to unify the ward himself. Aogiri Tree soon conscripted him and sent him hunting for Rize, which led him to Anteiku, where Kaneki's similar scent set off a scuffle. He urged Kaneki to warn Rize away, but Aogiri seized Kaneki in her place and dragged Banjou and his followers along.

Banjou proposed they escape together and formed the Anti-Aogiri group; the attempt failed, and Yamori took them captive while torturing Kaneki. Freed during the 11th Ward Battle, Banjou and his gas-masked trio, Ichimi, Jiro, and Sante, joined Kaneki's group. He trained beside Kaneki, shadowed his investigations, and was wounded by both Eto and a berserk Kaneki, forgiving the latter without hesitation. Years later, as the 6th ward's leader, he answered Ayato Kirishima's plea to help raid Cochlea and rescue Hinami, battling through the compound and using his healing kagune on a gravely hurt Ayato. In the end he manages the United Front's operations alongside Tsukiyama. For all his loyalty he has scant strength, cannot use his kagune in combat, and relies instead on a remarkable regeneration that mends grave wounds almost instantly.
