Koutarou Amon

Years of hard training have given Amon a powerfully muscular, athletic frame to match his considerable height. Black hair crowns teal eyes, and his eyebrows curl in a distinctive hook at their tips. During his investigator days he dressed in a black suit and tie, adding a white overcoat for fieldwork and a silver cross hung at his neck. After his transformation he takes to a hooded cloak worn over a high-collared outfit, a kakugan glinting in his right eye. His right hand, reshaped from kagune, first regrows deformed with only three fingers and a blade-like spur before recovering more of its shape as time passes.

An orphaned childhood convinced Amon that the world itself had gone wrong, and he resolved to set it right. Blaming ghouls for that distortion, he made their destruction his mission and defined his own morality as anything carried out in the name of justice. Being spared by Ken Kaneki cracked that certainty and stirred a curiosity about ghouls he had never permitted himself. Beneath the crusade lives a warm, sympathetic man with a soft spot for children and a heavy dread of losing those close to him, a fear rooted in how many he has already lost.

That worldview shatters once Akihiro Kanou turns him into an artificial one-eyed ghoul. Having become the very thing he swore to wipe out, Amon can no longer feed on his old rage and sinks into a hollow emptiness, unable to picture any place for himself. Only by embracing that emptiness as a feeling in its own right does he recover a sense of direction. As a ghoul he begins to see his former enemies as beings capable of the same tenderness and cruelty humans hold, reaching an uneasy peace even with Touka Kirishima, who killed his mentor. His hardest reckoning is admitting that his hatred was really a twisting of the love he still bore for his ghoul foster father, Donato Porpora; accepting that truth finally lets him make peace with himself.

Kanou's surgery gave Amon the kakuhou of Yoshimura and an ukaku kagune, making him a half-ghoul. An early, uncontrolled surge of Rc cells left him unstable enough to be branded a Floppy and discarded, until the CCG's own experiments corrected the defect; hybrid vigor is said to make his powers fiercer than those of a naturally born ghoul. His ukaku kagune unleashes a barrage of projectiles able to punch clean through a ghoul's body with pinpoint accuracy, and he can extend a tentacle for closer work. In his kakuja states he dons grotesque, mutated armor, firing human-sized drill-shaped shards and, in a second form, sprouting huge scimitars from his shoulders. He also fights with a bladed kagune arm and can trigger an Rc backflow that bursts an opponent's kagune on contact.

Raw physicality has always set Amon apart. As a human he numbered among the tiny fraction whose strength rivaled ghouls, and as a one-eyed ghoul he rips through kagune, hurls foes aside with single blows, and knits grievous wounds shut within moments, moving with startling speed and toughness. A lethal hand with a quinque, he wields the koukaku Doujima 1/2, once broken and rebuilt into a lance that he now completes with his own kagune; Kura, a bladed quarterstaff that separates into twin falchions; and the auto-equipping armor quinque Arata proto II, which lets him trade blows with Kaneki himself. His recorded Rc level of 10181 stands as the highest in the entire series.
