Nico

Fashion is where Nico announces himself, favoring bright, ornate, distinctly feminine outfits. His brown hair is cut low, stubble shades his cleft chin, and his eyes are violet. Colorful sunglasses usually rest pushed up on his forehead above pink lips, and a typical ensemble pairs a frilled pink v-neck blouse with a blue scarf, an orange belt, red trousers embroidered with roses, and heeled boots. When the occasion calls for it, he dons a clown mask.

Outwardly Nico is theatrical and gregarious, all playfulness on the surface, but that mask conceals something warped underneath. He is drawn to the extremes of existence, captivated equally by great beauty and by appalling violence, and his time with Yamori paints him as a sadomasochist who savors his own suffering as much as anyone else's. Even so, he is not without limits. He balks at cruelty toward children and at some of fellow Clown Roma Hoito's excesses. Sharp and calculating, he gathered intelligence on Aogiri while winning its leader's trust with ease, yet he is also flighty, apt to fixate on whatever fascination currently holds him and ignore everything else.

During the Aogiri arc, Nico and Yamori were tasked by the group's leaders with seizing the person who carried Rize's scent. Working with Ayato Kirishima, they stormed Anteiku and captured Ken Kaneki. When Yamori later prepared to kill a mother ghoul in front of her child, Nico tried to dissuade him, finding it too cruel even by ghoul standards, and after Yamori killed both the boy Kouto and his mother Kei anyway, Nico laid them side by side as the only gift he could offer. Following the invasion of Aogiri's 11th Ward Base, he mourned the loss of his hideout and of Yamori, and revealed to Souta that both of them belonged to the Clowns.

At Itori's bar he met Kaneki again, insisting he had come only for Yamori's sake, and fed him information on Aogiri's true aims and the identity of the One-Eyed King, whom he named as the little bandaged girl, Eto. Later, at a 13th ward nightclub with Roma, he recognized the disguised Haise Sasaki and marveled at his likeness to Kaneki. He then turned up unannounced at Goat's hideout, not for Roma but to curry favor with Kaneki, warning that Akira Mado was dying from a spike of Rc cells and steering the group toward Akihiro Kanou by way of a contact at the Great Wheel Act. During the Clown Siege he stood beside Uta near the CCG's main office and cut playfully through the S2 Squad with his kagune.

As a ghoul, Nico carries a rinkaku kagune, a single thick tail branching at its end, with a second form resembling a spine strung with bony hearts. He can use it to heal others, including humans, a trick he once employed to keep Yamori's victims alive longer, and he can detach it to slither across the ground on its own. His regeneration and his acute senses of smell and hearing round out his abilities. In the epilogue he keeps up his drinking friendships and travels south, hunting for love.
