Ink defines much of Uta's look. Elaborate designs run down both arms, a sun spreads across his left chest, and his eyes appear permanently blackened; he tells Haise Sasaki the darkened sclera come from injected ink, though some suspect he simply cannot switch off his kakugan. He stands lean and tall at 177 cm, wears his black hair in an undercut, and typically pairs a gray tank top with a black wrap sweater, loose harem pants, and dark sandals. A necklace strung with pale round stones finishes the everyday outfit, a look Kaneki finds faintly menacing.

His younger self looked softer, the hair lighter and swept back, sometimes held by a band, and none of the later tattoos were present. His masks have shifted repeatedly over the years: an early expressionless piece stitched like a voodoo doll, a wide-beaked bird design for the auction, a pattern of concentric ovals during the Clown Siege, and a half-face guard crossed by intersecting bars. A line inked on his neck, rendered in Greek characters, quotes the Roman poet Martial, declaring that he can live neither with a certain person nor without them.

Softly spoken and outwardly pleasant, Uta rarely lets his face shift, yet he needles those around him with a dry, playful streak. Little seems to rattle him; he can watch someone he admires die simply to honor their wishes, then carry on as though nothing happened. As a craftsman he prizes strange, unsettling beauty, respects fellow artists, and hunts constantly for fresh inspiration to pour into his masks.

Beneath the calm runs a genuinely sadistic streak carried over from a brutal youth in the 4th Ward. He once called Kaneki's undoing 'fun' and, like the rest of the Clowns, takes pleasure in stirring disorder, though he has also shown real concern for people close to him and is respected enough that others seek his advice. The divide traces back to everything he witnessed growing up, which convinced him the world can only cherish humans and never ghouls. Facing that emptiness, he and the Clowns play the fool and revel in slaughter to feel alive. He admits he struggles to change in a shifting world, and Itori observes that only Yomo's steady support lets him open toward something new.

As a young man Uta rules the 4th Ward as its strongest ghoul, earning the title of peacemaker. A string of evenly matched duels with a wandering fighter named Renji Yomo ends not in a winner but in friendship. When investigators under Kishou Arima sweep the district, his gang holds firm until the Reaper overwhelms Yomo, and Uta calls a retreat once Yoshimura arrives to pull his friend clear.

Years later he crafts a mask for Ken Kaneki at his studio, deliberately fixing the right-side eyepatch so the boy's rarer left eye stays visible. He resurfaces at Itori's bar to trade old stories, then joins the team storming Aogiri Tree to recover Kaneki, wounding the regenerating Noro along the way while admitting he is holding back. He also feeds Kaneki details about Arima's fearsome standing.

At the Auction he presides as showman, selling captives before yanking the eyepatch from Tooru Mutsuki to reveal a prized one-eyed ghoul. He quietly warns the young investigator that the raid has collapsed, only for Juuzou Suzuya, disguised as merchandise, to stab him again and again in the face. Uta shrugs off the wounds, spars with Take Hirako while wearing Arima's borrowed face, and slips away with Roma Hoito.

His stranger gifts come to the fore during the Clown Siege. He deploys a koukaku tail, sprouts as many as six of them to skitter through the air like a spider, and molds his features into Yukinori Shinohara to unbalance Suzuya, then into Sasaki to fool Mutsuki. The ruse turns grisly as Mutsuki mutilates his face. Later, aligned with Donato Porpora against Goat, Uta finally unveils his koukaku kakuja, a mass of arms and a gaping flytrap maw, and gives in to a long-held urge to devour Yomo. Yomo pins him to a lightning rod and electrocutes him, tearing the kakuja apart. Broken on the ground, Uta grieves for the closeness they once shared, and Renji reaches him, reviving their bond and carrying him to safety. Six years on he still designs masks, works silver, and cheerfully plots new ways to ambush his lifelong friend.
