Gas Masks

Operating out of the 6th ward, Gas Masks answers to Kazuichi Banjou and keeps a distinctive shared appearance. Each member pairs a hoodie with a numbered covering styled after a gas mask, which gives the gang both its name and its recognizable street presence. Whether those masks serve any real function or exist purely for looks has never been made clear.

The gang began as Banjou and three followers living in the 11th ward. Once Aogiri Tree seized that district, the group was captured and pressed into service, though in secret they rallied fellow prisoners into the resistance cell known as Anti-Aogiri. A botched escape cost several lives and broke the outfit apart, after which its four core figures rallied behind Ken Kaneki and helped shape his own team. That team eventually disbanded as well, leaving the survivors without a leader or a cause.

Three years on, Banjou had risen to control the 6th ward, and the reborn gang swelled to what looks like dozens of ghouls. Many of them signed on to the operation Banjou and Ayato Kirishima mounted to break into Cochlea and free Hinami Fueguchi.

Banjou leads the group, backed by the three founding members who took the low numbers: Ichimi as number one, Jiro as number two, and Sante as number three. On separate occasions two outsiders passed through the ranks in disguise, with Touka Kirishima wearing number thirty-three and Uta hiding behind number eighty-six.
