Sphinx is an import-focused trading firm in Tokyo Ghoul that fronted a far darker operation, quietly funneling fluids rendered from liquefied ghouls to the Commission of Counter Ghoul for its weapons and suppressant research.
On the surface, the Trading Company Sphinx dealt in imported foreign merchandise brought to sell across the Japanese market. Beneath that legitimate face it ran a covert trade, supplying the anti-ghoul agency with liquefied ghoul remains used to manufacture quinque and Rc-suppressant technology.
The concealed business channeled dissolved-ghoul solutions into the Commission's hands, feeding the tools the agency relied on in its war against ghoul-kind. Records credit the enterprise to Nanao Yasuhisa, father of Kurona and Nashiro, who is said to have launched the venture on money inherited from his own father.

Naruto vs Luffy with the twist nobody asked for: Luffy tickled Hinata on date night, and she kind of liked it. We break down the whole fight and commit to a winner....

There are no women on Namek. That isn't an oversight, it's the biology. Why we handed Piccolo the one thing his own species rules out, and why it had to be trap soul....
Akihiro Kanou later exposes that origin story as a fabrication. In truth Nanao's ventures collapsed, draining the Yasuhisa fortune and burying him under crushing debt. The Commission offered to shoulder that debt if he let his mansion serve as cover for a hidden laboratory built for ghoulification experiments. He consented, yet grew sickened by the cruelty of the work and moved to alert the wider world. To silence him, the agency killed the Yasuhisa couple and staged their deaths as a ghoul home invasion.
