Chapter 90

At the twentieth ward branch, Taishi Fura phones Koutarou Amon with an update on Rabbit and the ghouls' recent movements, and Akira Mado assists in breaking down the Black Rabbit case. Hideyoshi Nagachika bursts in bearing lunch for the two, and Akira asks his read on the matter. Hide argues that comparing kagune traces would settle it, though he suspects two separate ghouls are at work, and he concludes that the previous year's killings were carried out as revenge on behalf of the so-called daughter ghoul. When Akira notes his fascination with ghouls, Hide shrugs that they are always in the headlines, so his interest is unavoidable.

Yukinori Shinohara and Juuzou Suzuya arrive with fresh material on the Binge Eater. Combing through old records, Shinohara turned up an accident with falling I-beams that occurred the same October as the Binge Eater's murders. Amon recalls a doctor drawing heavy criticism for carrying out a transplant without the family's consent, and Shinohara confirms the surgeon was Dr. Kanou, a onetime CCG coroner whose whereabouts are now unknown. The patient who received the organs was a Kami University student, Ken Kaneki, who has not shown up to class in months. Shinohara raises the possibility that the injured woman was the Binge Eater, and Hide admits he knows Kaneki well as a close friend.

On a rooftop, Kaneki, Banjou, Tsukiyama, and the Gas Masks lie in wait for Taguchi. The moment she comes into view, Naki and the White Suits pounce and knock her senseless before anyone can question her. Kaneki moves to intercept the White Suits, and in the middle of his standoff with Naki, Matasaka Kamishiro launches a sudden attack on him.

The investigators connect the Binge Eater case to Dr. Kanou's unauthorized transplant and to Kaneki as the recipient, with Hide confirming his friendship. Kaneki's ambush of Taguchi is spoiled when Naki's White Suits seize her first, and Shachi ambushes Kaneki as the confrontation erupts.

This first chapter of the tenth volume carries the Japanese title 追駆 (Tsuiku), given in English as Pursuit. It converges two hunts, the CCG's toward Kaneki and Kaneki's toward Kanou, on the same target.
