Chapter 89

Kaneki's group calls at Kanou General Hospital, where Nurse Taguchi greets Kaneki and Banjou and tells them the doctor is away on a business trip. Once outside, Banjou concludes there is nothing more to be done now that Kanou has supposedly left the country, but Kaneki flatly disagrees.

In a library, Touka and her classmates cram for their exams and talk over what lies ahead for them. Stepping away for a drink, she runs into Hinami, who begins telling her about the people now surrounding Kaneki. Their talk is cut short when Yoriko calls Touka over and hands her a present that an eye-patched man had left for her. Touka bolts outside at once to search for Kaneki, but finds no one there.

On the rooftop with Banjou, Kaneki reveals that he combed through the year's airline passenger records and found no sign of the doctor, meaning either Kanou lied to the nurse or she lied to them. Taguchi, meanwhile, updates Kanou by phone on Kaneki's progress. After the call she speaks with Shiro about the test subjects, learning more of the process while she waits for Rize's kakuhou to grow back.

The hospital feeds Kaneki a false claim that Kanou has gone abroad, which Kaneki disproves using passenger manifests. Touka is handed a gift from an eye-patched man but misses Kaneki entirely. The closing scene confirms Taguchi is Kanou's accomplice and that Rize is still being farmed for kakuhou.

The ninth-volume chapter carries the Japanese title 奸計 (Kankei), presented in English as Scheme. It underscores the deception running through Kanou's hospital and the doctor's continued exploitation of Rize.
