As Takizawa keeps trading blows with Amon, his mind slips back to Kanou's prison and the cells the two shared. He remembers the starvation, the horror of being fed his own family, and the conversations in which he and Amon recognized the grim irony of their bond and swore to each other that they would not give up. In the present he breaks through at last, piercing Amon's kakuhou, and admits to himself that he had always envied Amon as an investigator. Amon slips out of consciousness and reverts to his human form, but Takizawa tumbles into a pit and begins to be devoured by his own kakuja, his thoughts unraveling. To stop the process, Kurona empties an Rc suppressant tank into the pit, flooding it with the drug and pulling Takizawa back to himself.

At the same time, elsewhere on the battlefield, Matsuri Washuu takes a katana straight through the head.

Flashbacks lay bare the shared suffering that binds Takizawa and Amon, framing their duel as the settling of an old rivalry. Takizawa defeats Amon by striking his kakuhou, reverting the ghoul to human form, but nearly loses himself to his kakuja until Kurona's flood of suppressant saves him. A parallel beat shows Matsuri gravely wounded by a katana to the head.

Titled Question Child, written 問い子 and read as Toiko, this is the one hundred fifteenth chapter of Tokyo Ghoul:re. It ran in the 2017-15 issue on March 9, 2017, as part of the eleventh volume. The chapter resolves the Takizawa and Amon confrontation while tracing the origins of Takizawa's envy and trauma.
