Summary

Wearing a different face, Uta counsels Renji Yomo that enduring grief is a passage everyone must cross, warning him as a friend that surrendering to his losses will cost him his life. Yomo answers that this very truth is what has carried him so far.

In the streets above, Shuu Tsukiyama and Nishiki Nishio press on with their search for food, questioning their own choices as a rain begins to fall.

Remembering how Kaneki and Hinami once read side by side, Touka Kirishima trades blows with Juuzou Suzuya, who slips past her kagune and jeers. Hinami Fueguchi, her injuries closed, unfurls an enormous kagune and cuts through the panicked investigators while the ghouls keep fleeing. She sends Touka off to guard the children and blames herself, recalling the day she ran to Kaneki after her mother's death and how the sight of her grief slowly changed him. Attacking Suzuya and Hanbee Abara as they wield their quinques, Hinami is outmaneuvered and loses a leg, yet she refuses to yield.

Bleeding, she reflects that she cannot simply order her sister Touka to be happy, since misery comes easily and joy is the harder road. The only word she can hold onto is to live, and with it a prayer to remember her mother, her father, and every trace of the life they shared, so that none of it was meaningless. She confesses the envy she long felt toward Touka and her buried wish to stand at Kaneki's side. As another strike lands, a kagune appears from nowhere, Kaneki's, catching Furuta completely off guard.

Notes

Published on September 28, 2017 in issue 2017-44, this nineteen-page chapter closes out the thirteenth volume's mid-arc fighting. Its title, 愁う, reads as Ureu, but it can also be voiced as shūu, echoing 驟雨, the sudden shower that was the very first word Kaneki taught Hinami back in Chapter 14.
