:re Chapter 146

Helicopters of the JSDF pour aerial fire onto Dragon, driving the enormous kakuja down to street level, where a waiting line of tanks opens up on it. The armor accomplishes nothing; Dragon rolls over the vehicles like folded paper and shrugs off the barrage entirely. As the creature keeps ravaging Tokyo, the radio channels fill with the last cries of the soldiers caught in its path.

Beneath the 24th Ward, Koori Ui presses Kichimura Washuu about the horror he has loosed and about his earlier promise that it might restore the dead Hairu Ihei and Kishou Arima. Worn down, Furuta reasons that if kagune spring from imagination, then perhaps life itself could arise from such boundless chaos. When Ui demands a figure, Furuta gives him zero, a flat impossibility, and says the carnage should have made that obvious.

Ui recalls the fairy tale of the ward's King, who supposedly poured his own life force into the world, but dismisses it as a fluke whose cost, more lives taken than made, was never worth it. Furuta answers that he only ever offered a path toward the goal, never a guarantee the goal would be what Ui wanted, and he apologizes sincerely when Ui confesses that his hope was a comforting delusion he clung to in desperation.

Turning to the watching Take Hirako and Yusa Arima, Furuta asks why Ui spared them. Ui explains that their fight to the death ended the instant Dragon surfaced and forced them to simply survive. Furuta then declares his resignation as the CCG's Bureau Chief and departs. Ui resolves to head aboveground and aid the investigators, Hirako offers to guard his back, and Yusa asks whether they are moving toward the world Arima wanted, a question Hirako cannot answer.

The JSDF's air and armored assaults fail completely against Dragon. Furuta admits to Ui that the beast has no power to resurrect Arima or Hairu. Furuta resigns as CCG Bureau Chief, and Ui, Hirako and Yusa set out to help the investigators aboveground.

This eighteen-page chapter appeared in issue 2017-48 on October 26, 2017, within the fourteenth volume. Its title is simply a colon, a mark widely read as a reference to the punctuation in Tokyo Ghoul:re itself.
