Summary

Deep within Cochlea, the veteran ghoul Matasaka Kamishiro, better known as Shachi, hurls himself at Kishou Arima and brands the investigator a mere tool of the Washuu family. His opening rush cracks the floor apart, so Arima signals Squad 0 into a defensive arrangement. Shachi lands a kick on one guard, shrugs off a missed shot from Narukami, and works out that his opponent's odd sense of timing must come from failing eyesight. He fells two more subordinates and plants himself squarely in front of Arima.

A memory surfaces of Shachi speaking with Renji Yomo and Nishiki Nishio once the Owl Suppression Operation had ended. He warned them that Eto had seized Yoshimura and that keeping Rize Kamishiro hidden away carried real risk. When Nishiki wonders aloud why he clings so hard to protecting her, Shachi answers that guarding Rize is simply his obligation as a parent. Back in the present, he unleashes his kagune and charges, aiming at the blind spot he believes is Arima's one weakness. Arima weaves past the strikes and drives a blade through the old ghoul's throat. Slipping toward death, Shachi still praises the skill his killer displays despite barely being able to see.

Away from the prison, Kuki Urie drills the Quinx Squad at a gym, insisting that stamina counts as much as raw force for anyone who hunts ghouls. Haise Sasaki draws him aside for a word. In the sixth ward, Kazuichi Banjou grumbles that Eto packs King Bileygr with vocabulary far too advanced for the many ghouls who never received schooling, while Uta praises the book as something that should stir people. Ayato Kirishima cuts in to say the writing pushes ghouls to yearn for the coming of the One-Eyed King. Outside the gym, Urie condemns the choice to let Eto address a crowd and sneers at the ghoul-rights groups now surfacing, one of them led by Hisashi Ogura. Haise reveals that he will sit out the Rushima Landing Operation to defend Cochlea alongside Arima Squad, and he asks Urie to rescue Tooru Mutsuki, which Urie accepts. Ayato, set on freeing Hinami Fueguchi from a life she never truly wanted inside Aogiri Tree, presses Banjou to help him break into the prison. Below ground, Furuta remarks on Eto's cropped hair, and she brushes him off as Akihiro Kanou's clown.
