Summary

On the Rushima shoreline the CCG collide with the Blades. Kousuke Houji tears through waves of Aogiri Tree ghouls, and when a rush comes while the investigators reload, Koori Ui cuts the attackers down rather than let them seize the opening. Suzuya Squad pushes across the beach to thin the enemy's guard, Matsuri Washuu directs the units from the rear, and the Quinx Squad steadies itself for the fight.

Meanwhile, guards march the shackled Eto through Cochlea. Passing a cell brings Haise's own imprisonment flooding back. After the Owl Extermination he had been held there as Prisoner #240, his mind coming apart: he clawed at his own eyes until the wounds turned septic, turned away food, wept through the nights, and tore at the door until his nails ripped free while he screamed to be released. Amnesia gripped him too, and the staff assumed he would not survive. Everything shifted once Arima began delivering books to his cell, and reading pulled his sanity back from the edge. Arima later told him a name would be needed, since the plan was to enroll him as an investigator through a rehabilitation program, and asked him to choose one. He drew his two favorite characters from the words for coffee and world and combined them into Haise.

In the present, Arima announces he is heading to the Central building. Haise slips off alone into a gym locker room and lets his tangled thoughts spill out. Outside Cochlea, Ayato Kirishima, Kazuichi Banjou, and the Gas Masks wait while Ayato runs through the plan and steps up to the entrance with a security card. To his shock the alarms erupt, and inside Haise cracks his knuckles in alarm.
