:re Chapter 71

Struck in the throat by Arima's Narukami, Renji Yomo coughs up blood and sinks into memory. He recalls Touka and Ayato as small children walking beside their parents, Arata and Hikari Kirishima, until the family crossed paths with Arima, who attacked them and killed Hikari. Afterward Yomo slammed Arata against a wall and screamed at him. Arata wept that he had been too weak to save her, and Yomo told him to stop softening the blow by shouldering the blame, declaring it was Arata's fault she died and that he wished Arata had perished instead. Later, alone, Yomo resolved to stop blaming others.

Arata gradually shifted his diet toward eating ghouls rather than humans and eventually developed a kakuja, which made him a marked target for the investigators who finally brought him down. At Anteiku, Yomo confessed he was ill-suited to waiting tables, and Yoshimura guessed he was fretting over Touka and Ayato. Yoshimura observed that protecting someone is hard no matter how fiercely one feels. Hikari, wild in her youth and given to killing and eating humans, had mellowed after having children, while Arata's turn to devouring ghouls earned him a kakuja and the CCG nickname Corpse Collector, leaving him feeling his past had caught up with him. Yomo admitted he did not want the two children to follow their parents' road, worried that Ayato's strong convictions could be aimed at the wrong things, and asked Yoshimura to take Touka on so she might live in peace, saying watching over his niece and nephew was the least he could do.

The flashback ends. In the present, Ayato blocks Arima's strike and saves Yomo, only for Arima to overpower both him and Touka. Still weighing what hope means, Yomo hurls a bolt of lightning at Arima, who nullifies it and returns fire with several bolts of his own. Kaneki then appears out of nowhere and blocks the attack.

A flashback reveals that Arima killed Hikari Kirishima and that Yomo blamed her husband Arata for her death. Arata's shift to eating ghouls gave him a kakuja and the nickname Corpse Collector before the CCG killed him. Yomo asked Yoshimura to shelter Touka at Anteiku so she could live safely. In the present, Ayato saves Yomo but is subdued alongside Touka, and Kaneki arrives to block Arima's assault.

The chapter carries the Japanese title 望苦, romanized as Boku and translated as Hope and Suffering. It ran in issue 2016-19 on April 7, 2016, and was later collected in the seventh volume of Tokyo Ghoul:re, positioned between chapters 70 and 72.
