History
Seized and sold off while Gardar, her husband, and the village's other men were away at war with a neighboring settlement, Arnheid loses her young son to murder, since buyers paid more for women without children. Ketil, taken with her looks, keeps her as his private mistress and confidante. Gardar himself falls into slavery, yet he slays his master, breaks loose, and rides across Ketil's territory hunting for her, only for Snake to seize him. She sets him free, but a wound from the escape festers, and she conceals him under a bed inside Sverkel's house. When Thorfinn and Einar try to spirit the pair away, Gardar dies of his injuries soon after they depart.
Ketil then hauls Arnheid back and beats her so brutally that she miscarries his child and succumbs to the wounds. As Thorfinn and Einar struggle to save her, she refuses any world still ruled by war and bondage, asking only to repay the two friends' kindness on the farm and to rejoin Gardar and Hjalti past death. Her loss steels Thorfinn's resolve to reach Vinland and raise a village free of slaves, and the colony they plant there bears her name.
