Flott

A grown, fair-haired man, Flott wears a short yet full beard and parts his hair down the middle. When Vargr's group first comes across him, months of hardship have left him gaunt and grimy.

The manga tells Flott's story through what he endures rather than through any listed traits. Still, a fierce will to live shows plainly: he holds out for months alone in dangerous land, scraping by on wild berries and slipping past arrows until he at last reaches safety.

Flott lived in Markland and took part in its trade with the Lnu. Since the Lnu favored red fabric, he asked the trader Vargr to bring a fresh supply from Greenland the next time he sailed in. Come spring, though, the natives quit visiting, and a couple of weeks on they turned hostile, showering Markland with arrows around the clock, yet never entering the village itself. As the assault dragged on, Flott announced he would head back to Greenland, while the rest debated raising a new settlement in another spot. They ultimately abandoned him there.

Left on his own, Flott passed his days dodging incoming arrows, one of which struck his rear, and holed up in the mountains on a diet of fruit and berries. When summer came early, he caught the sound of Thorfinn clanging on pots, yet assumed it was the Lnu. One day, fishing beside a river, he watched a native drift downstream and guessed trouble had hit a village upriver. He climbed the river to look and discovered every native dead and left unburied. From Flott, Thorfinn and the others learn the Lnu had been wiped out by illness. Styrk works out that they caught it while mingling with Markland's settlers and struck back believing the Nords were its source, keeping their distance with arrows out of sheer fear.
