History
Hrafnkell works as a carpenter with his own workshop and apprentices, raising his daughters Hild and Hrefna alongside his wife in a Norwegian coastal village. A quiet family meal, during which he talks trade and tools with Hild, is broken apart when Askeladd's band storms the settlement. His wife is run through with a spear at the door, and Hrafnkell orders the girls to slip out the back and make for the forest. Hrefna becomes separated and is lost, and when Hild begs him to search for her, he can only hold his daughter in wordless grief. During the same raid, Hrafnkell is cut down by the young warrior Thorfinn, the loss that later drives Hild to hunt him.
