Hrefna

A young girl with blond hair, Hrefna ties it into two braids, parting it to one side. Her lengthy fringe is worked into its own braid that lies across her brow.

Lively and blunt, Hrefna says whatever is on her mind without a second thought. She is clearly fond of her kin, nagging Hild into cutting her hair for a new look and telling their father she intends to wed into money rather than settle for one of the workshop's apprentices.

At a family dinner, Hrefna chides her father Hrafnkell for monopolizing Hild with workshop talk about their saw, insisting she wants her sister's company as well. She presses Hild to let her redo her hair, trim the bangs, and dress her nicely, arguing that so pretty a face would win Hild no shortage of suitors. Hild brushes aside any care for catching boys' attention, and Hrefna cautions that she will never land a husband; she is then shocked when Hild says marriage holds no appeal, and more so when Hrafnkell backs her, saying she need not wed. He offers her a match from among his apprentices instead, but she insists she will marry into a wealthy house, not tie herself to a carpenter.

A knock comes at the door, and as their mother answers it, one of Askeladd's raiders drives a spear into her belly, killing her. Hrafnkell hurries the girls out the back and toward the woods. Leaning spent against a tree, Hild notices Hrefna is gone and calls for her in a panic, only for Hrafnkell to reach her, clamp a hand over her mouth, and beg her to stay silent. To her pleas that he find Hrefna he offers just a mournful hug, a wordless sign the girl has likely died. Later, Hild's master gives his condolences after learning she came from the raided inlet village.
