Sweyn

Deep wrinkles and slack, sagging features age Sweyn's face, and his skin bears old scarring while gaps mark where teeth have been lost. For all that, he retains a thick crop of unruly black curls, and his beard is combed smooth and drawn into two opposing points.

An unquenchable hunger for control sits at the center of Sweyn's character. It is not merely the land and subjects he commands that drive him but his hold on the crown itself, and he will cut down any rival or set aside any scruple to keep his dominion over the northern territories and England intact. That domineering nature bleeds even into petty matters; when a young Canute once presented a dish he had cooked, Sweyn snapped that cooking was slave's work, exposing how narrowly he saw the world and how little he could connect with his own children.

Of his heirs, Canute draws the sharpest scorn. Sweyn regards him as a useless obstacle blocking his elder son Harald, and Canute himself acknowledges that his father never loved him and would prefer him dead. Sweyn holds that the crown imposes its own will on whoever wears it, compelling the king toward ever more conquest. He believes this happened to his own father and to himself, and that the same hunger will forever seize the next hand that grasps it.

Through wit, ruthlessness, and battlefield cunning, Sweyn built an empire that swallowed almost the whole of England and Wales while his more distant kingdoms stayed firmly under his control. His conquest and his ironclad rule loom over the events of the early series, and his eventual fate ties directly into the schemes surrounding Canute and Askeladd. The character is modeled on the historical Danish ruler Sweyn Forkbeard.
