Summary
Atli comes to, having been knocked out earlier when Thorfinn kicked him from his horse during the cart's crash. He is horrified to see his fellow riders scattered dead across the snow around him. Bjorn, still driven by the berserker mushroom and raging on despite the knife and spear buried in his bloodied back, crushes the last man's face and then spots Willibald and Canute sitting nearby. With a scream he starts toward them.
Willibald remarks that the fight is finished but that the victor has lost his mind, and he urges Canute to run. The prince instead asks where any sane person could be found in a world where all men are alike, none of them grasping what it means to love, or the meaning of life, of death, or of their own battles. Declaring that he has had enough, Canute stands and meets Bjorn face to face without flinching as the berserker looms over him.
