Ubik

Ubik takes the shape of a diminutive figure who hangs constantly in the air, never touching a surface and instead gliding as though swimming. A pair of spectacles seem grafted straight into his face, tendrils shaped like fins dangle from his underside, and his clasped hands rest below a permanent grin. Among the God Hand he is by far the tiniest.

When the God Hand gather, it is Ubik who carries the conversation and lays out most of the explanation. He works to wear down a prospective apostle, dangling temptation and insisting that no path forward exists unless they give up something they treasure. He avoids the outright lie altogether, choosing instead to warp and bend the truth until his target inches toward the bargain.

His silver tongue is his chief weapon, coaxing those marked by a beherit into surrendering the people or things they hold dear. He can also draw a person's consciousness into a chosen dimensional plane, splitting open time and space, as he does when he pulls Griffith through visions of the past. He freely reshapes his own scale, swelling to impossible height or dwindling small, and shapes puppet-like husks of other beings to hide within, as when he and Conrad assumed the guise of the fortune teller who had appeared in Griffith's early years. Like his fellow demons he reads the current of causality, an awareness bordering on omniscience that lets him anticipate nearly every outcome and tip events toward the one he chooses, yet he falls short of knowing all. At the Albion Incarnation Ceremony he and the elder God Hand raise crude bodies from the malice-driven heaps of corpses. Putting these gifts to use, he pushes Griffith toward sacrificing the Band of the Falcon and compels Theresia to look on as her father slays her mother to gain apostlehood; long after the Great Wave he accompanies Void, Conrad, and Slan on a taunting call to Griffith in Falconia.
