Kureno Sohma

Kureno is a tall, good-looking man whose frame is lean but firmed by some muscle. His auburn-red hair, rendered brown in the 2019 adaptation, stops around the nape, with a couple of cowlicks and untidy bangs that split into an M-shape and shade much of his brow. His eyes, similarly reddish-brown in print and brown on screen, carry a settled, unhurried calm.

A suit is his near-constant uniform, usually a black vest over an open grey shirt worn without a tie, paired with dark trousers and brown shoes. Left to his own preferences, though, he reaches for plain, pale garments that let him fade into his surroundings rather than draw a glance.

Those who know him compare him to Tohru Honda: gentle, well-mannered, a touch absent-minded, and forever placing other people ahead of himself. Years of confinement to the Sohma estate, where Akito seldom permits him out, have left him strikingly unfamiliar with ordinary life. His generosity is at once his finest quality and his undoing, since it lets Akito rule over him more completely than any other zodiac member, and he cannot bring himself to scold her or walk away.

He remains at her side to spare her loneliness even though he understands she truly longs for Shigure, and he carries guilt over being the one member granted total freedom while the rest stay bound. He forgives her for everything, including the day she drives a knife into his back, and asks for little beyond what he already holds. Only much later, realizing that his constant presence keeps Akito trapped in her mistakes, does he resolve to leave and finally chase a life of his own choosing.

Kureno once bore the curse of the Rooster, tenth of the zodiac animals, though his transformed shape was oddly that of a sparrow, a small bird that could actually take flight. His bond snapped around the age of sixteen, making him the first Sohma in memory to be released. The break sent Akito into a panic, since it signaled her hold on the zodiac unraveling, and she begged him never to abandon her. Pitying her, he agreed to feign that he was still cursed and to remain at the main house indefinitely, a devotion that eventually turned physical and shattered his bond with Shigure.

His careful routine cracks when he stumbles into Arisa Uotani at the convenience store where she works, fumbling an armful of goods much as Tohru once had, and her smile stays with him. A second meeting draws them closer, yet his promise to Akito pushes him to swear off seeing Arisa again. In time, understanding that his leaving is what Akito needs in order to heal, he walks away from the compound with only what he can carry. Arisa helps him move, and the two settle far out in the countryside, where she later joins him for good. Years on, he is seen leaning on a cane, a quiet hint that the stabbing left lasting harm.
