Shoko Haimawari

Her hair, olive-brown and cut to about neck length, is normally teased upward into a bouffant. She is tall and slim, fair-skinned, middle-aged, with dark eyes.

Her wardrobe is deliberate: a navy blazer with cuffs over a dull brown high-necked top, a gold necklace, a body-con skirt matching the jacket, dark magenta stockings, and black flats. When Koichi was small she kept a bob and dressed far more plainly.

Shoko runs the relationship with her son by force. She corrects each mistake he makes with a reprimand and a slap delivered by Quirk, and her domineering streak occasionally overshoots, as when she barked at Kazuho Haneyama to speak up and sent the girl fleeing in a panic. She felt bad about it afterward.

That harshness is not the whole of her. She warmed to Makoto Tsukauchi almost immediately and greeted the man introduced as Takeshi Kuroiwa with perfect courtesy. Heroes are the sticking point: in her telling, they let themselves be used until their lives collapse, a view built on watching Koichi endanger himself chasing the job since childhood.

She loves him regardless, and stepped in bodily to stop him from chasing a bus possessed by the Monster Cat, only for Koichi to push past her and jump in anyway. Watching that, she conceded that she could not keep him grounded forever, and asked Kazuho and Knuckleduster to look out for him instead.

Shoko raised Koichi in the countryside. His Quirk, Slide and Glide, let him fly as an infant, and the sight terrified her enough that she swatted him down every single time he floated. The conditioning worked so thoroughly that he buried the ability and grew up unaware he had ever had it.

In the Senpai Arc she turned up at his penthouse in Tokyo demanding to meet the girlfriend he had invented. Koichi begged Makoto to play the part, and Shoko saw through it instantly and struck him for lying, then decided to stay on and tour the city with the two of them anyway. She met Kazuho and Knuckleduster, the latter posing as a Mr. Kuroiwa who ran a neighborhood watch that Koichi kindly helped with. When Makoto wondered aloud whether Kuroiwa had been a hero once, Shoko told her to stick with ordinary people and recounted how playing All Might had cost her son his high school entrance exam. Kazuho, secretly the child Koichi had saved that day, tried to defend him and got yelled at for mumbling.

The next morning's sightseeing ended on a bus that Kuin Hachisuka turned into a rampaging cat by dosing a stray with Trigger. Ingenium and Knuckleduster wrestled the vehicle onto an expressway heading for a collapsed overpass, and Team Idaten cleared nearly everyone off, but a second dose sent it away with Makoto still aboard. Koichi went in as The Crawler, pulled Makoto out, and made a jump in midair on force of will alone while Shoko remembered every time she had knocked him out of the sky. She went home shortly after, slapping Koichi one last time for saying something he did not mean, telling Kuroiwa to keep hitting him if he stepped out of line, and inviting Makoto to join the family.
