Marie Dok

Marie stays at the edges of the story, and the manga spends almost no panels on her; she exists mainly in the recollections of the men who loved her, a civilian woman of Wall Rose glimpsed in passing.

Little of her character reaches the page directly. What the story makes clear is the pull she exerted: meeting her was enough to make Nile Dok abandon any thought of the Survey Corps and pick a career that kept him near her, while Erwin Smith, equally smitten, refused to bend his plans even for her. The life she built afterward, raising children within Wall Rose, reads as the quiet domestic path both men were choosing between.

Years before the story begins, Marie crossed paths at a bar with Nile Dok and Erwin Smith while the two were still in the Training Corps. Both fell for her. Nile signed on with the Military Police so that he could remain nearby and keep her safe; Erwin held to his plan of joining the Survey Corps. She married Nile, and by the Royal Government arc she is pregnant with their third child while living with the family inside Wall Rose. Nile's later death leaves her a widow raising their three daughters.
